Thirteen-year-old Sanaa Barrington thought her visit to her great-grandmother's house would be nothing more than a school assignment.
She was wrong.
While listening to stories about the forgotten Black coal-mining community of Buxton, Iowa, Sanaa is suddenly pulled into the past. When she awakens in the early 1900s, she finds herself living among the very people whose names and stories have survived within her family.
Taken in by Indiana and Cornelius Thomas, Sanaa begins to experience life inside a community built by Black families determined to create something of their own despite racial pressure, economic exploitation, dangerous mine conditions, and the ever-present possibility of loss.
But Sanaa's journey through Buxton soon becomes personal.
As she develops relationships with the people around her, she discovers that her family's history contains a missing piece—a child whose fate may determine whether Sanaa herself will ever exist.
When danger threatens that child's life, Sanaa must make a choice.
And that choice changes her family's future.
When Sanaa finally returns to her own time, she discovers something impossible waiting inside the family album: a photograph showing her among the ancestors she had encountered in the past.
Then another photograph appears.
Another name emerges.
And another message arrives:
Keep following the line.
Now Sanaa must confront the possibility that her journey through time was never an accident.
The ancestors have left something behind.
And they expect her to find it.
The Coal Dust Road is a story about ancestry, family, memory, survival, historical erasure, and the invisible connections that bind generations together.
The past is not finished with Sanaa Barrington.
